A new museum celebrates the life, architecture and heritage of Argentina’s iconic seaside city

Mar del Plata has a new cultural destination—and this time, the story is not about its beaches, casinos or famous waterfront.

It is about the city itself.

The recently established Museo Arquitecto Roberto Cova (MARC) offers visitors an opportunity to discover Mar del Plata through its architecture, urban history and cultural heritage, while honoring one of the city’s most passionate defenders of its architectural identity.

The museum is located at 14 de Julio 2122, in the historic home where architect and historian Roberto Cova was born, lived and worked. Cova donated the property during his lifetime with the intention that it would eventually become a cultural space open to the community.

The Man Behind the Museum

Roberto Cova (1930–2021) was much more than an architect.

He was a historian, researcher, professor and one of the most important voices in the preservation of Mar del Plata’s architectural heritage. Throughout his career, he documented the city’s buildings, neighborhoods and architectural evolution, helping generations understand that Mar del Plata’s identity extends far beyond its coastline.

MARC was created as a way to preserve and share that legacy.

A House That Became a Museum

Perhaps one of the most fascinating aspects of MARC is the building itself.

Rather than creating a museum inside a modern institutional space, the project preserves the home where Cova’s personal and professional life unfolded.

The result is an intimate cultural experience. Visitors are not simply entering an exhibition—they are entering part of the architect’s own history.

The museum brings together objects, documents, architectural references and works connected with the history of Mar del Plata and Cova’s work.

Understanding Mar del Plata Through Architecture

For visitors, MARC provides a different perspective on the city.

Mar del Plata is often presented through its beaches, the Rambla, the Casino and its summer lifestyle. But its architectural landscape tells another story—one shaped by different periods, styles, social transformations and generations of residents.

The museum invites visitors to look at the city differently: to see buildings not simply as structures, but as pieces of history.

Preserving a City’s Identity

At a time when historic buildings in many cities are under pressure from redevelopment and changing urban needs, MARC carries an important message.

Preserving architectural heritage is not necessarily about freezing a city in the past. It is about understanding where the city came from so that future development does not erase its identity.

That philosophy was central to Cova’s work and remains one of the museum’s most relevant contributions.

A New Stop for Cultural Travelers

For international visitors, MARC adds another dimension to the Mar del Plata experience.

After exploring the beaches, the Rambla and the city’s famous landmarks, travelers can discover the cultural and architectural story behind the destination.

The museum is particularly appealing to visitors interested in architecture, urban history, design, heritage and Argentine culture.

A Museum About a City

Perhaps the best way to understand MARC is to see it not simply as a museum dedicated to one architect, but as a museum about Mar del Plata itself.

Through Roberto Cova’s eyes, visitors are invited to discover the buildings, streets and architectural traditions that helped create the character of Argentina’s most famous Atlantic resort city.

MARC is a reminder that every city has a story—and sometimes, that story is written in stone, brick, concrete and architecture.
